Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions
Mr. Sessions has been a Senator from Alabama for nearly 20 years (since 1997).
Over the course of his time in Washington, Senator Sessions has a mixed record on race, which is one of his more contentious areas. In 2006, he supported extension of the Voting Rights Act. However prior to that he, along with other southern politicians, argued that the Act was being used to mold the outcomes of elections in their states. In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of southern states, finding Section 5 (involving Federal oversight in elections for some states) could not be enforced until it was revisited and the state’s concerns addressed.
